Matthew 6:1-18

IDEA: Why we do good deeds matters to God.

PURPOSE: To help listeners realize why the motives for what we do matters to Christ.

Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, “Let your light shine so that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).  In life as we live it, what do you think they would see?

How about giving to the poor, praying when called on in church, or fasting?

Would they qualify as “good deeds”?

I. What do you make of what Jesus says in Matthew 6:1?

What “acts of righteousness” is He talking about?

Read Matthew 6:2-4 – giving alms

Read Matthew 6:5-15 – praying in public

Read Matthew 6:16-18 – fasting

Do you think Jesus is telling His followers not to do these acts that are religious duties of almost every religion?

II. What do you think the “rewards” are that Jesus has in mind?

What is the “reward” if you do your “acts of righteousness before people?

What is the “reward” from your Father in heaven?

Can we “double-dip” and get both?
