What happens when people “fear the Lord” in a healthy way? Explore how this can lead to wisdom and relationship with God!
Do you find that there are some tensions that you can’t resolve—in life, and even in the Bible? Things that just don’t make sense? Well, don’t miss this next week’s Discover the Word conversations as the group continues their three-week series called “The Fear of the Lord.” Daniel Ryan Day is leading Bill Crowder, Elisa Morgan, and Rasool Berry through an exploration of what the Bible means by “wisdom” and in this conversation, they discover a sobering perspective about wisdom from Ecclesiastes and its connection with “The Fear of the Lord.”
Join the Bible study group on Discover the Word as they explore another section of Old Testament “wisdom literature”—the story of Job—and how it helps us better understand what true wisdom is. The group begins to discuss how Job’s story confirms that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
Sometimes we face situations that leave us with questions like “If God is good, then why do bad things happen, especially to good people?” We’re not alone, and perhaps the most notable story about this in the Bible is Job. In this Discover the Word conversation, the group explores how Job’s friends responded to his suffering with a perspective not unlike our own. Join them to see how Job’s story reinforces that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Have you ever noticed that the way the Bible answers some of our toughest questions about life is with a story? On Discover the Word this week, the Bible study group is exploring how the story of Job helps us better understand why the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Join them for this conversation as they discuss how God responded to Job questions, and how He spoke with . . . more questions.
This week on Discover the Word, the group has been talking about how “The Fear of the Lord” is the beginning of wisdom. The Bible is remarkably consistent in saying that. And so in this conversation, explore with them how fearing the Lord can actually draw us into friendship with Him. Discover how some of the Psalms demonstrate how “The Fear of the Lord” can actually help us praise God even in times of suffering.

The Bible’s wisdom books remind us again and again that the fear of the Lord is where real wisdom begins—and that’s the kind of wisdom we need for everyday life. From big decisions to ordinary moments, we all need God’s perspective to help us navigate what’s in front of us.
Proverbs offers that wisdom with a hopeful, “glass half-full” lens, giving practical guidance for daily choices. Ecclesiastes meets us in the tension, naming life’s frustrations and uncertainties with a more “glass half-empty” honesty. And Job takes us deeper, showing that a healthy fear of the Lord isn’t about being afraid—it’s about being drawn into a real, trusting relationship with God as we learn to revere all of who He is, even when life doesn’t make sense.

(Use this prayer to start a conversation with God)
“Jesus, help me have a healthy fear of God that allows me to live with wisdom throughout my life. Enable me to revere God for who He is and not for what He does so that I may deepen my relationship with You. Open my eyes to see more clearly the wonder and awe of who You are.”
